Former Metal Shop – Central Indiana

A former Indianapolis metal shop achieved over 96% reduction in chlorinated solvents using strategic chemical injection and barrier wall technology.

ORIN successfully treated chlorinated solvent contaminated groundwater utilizing insitu chemical injection. ORIN’s approach was to incorporate a barrier wall to stop migration off site, as well as hot spot treatment around MW-14. Approximately forty-eight injection points were designated as BAM Ultra points, while twenty injection points were designated as ABC+ points. The majority of injection points were designated for the barrier wall while a small portion targeted monitoring wells.

The Challenge

The site faced multiple contamination challenges:

  • Multiple Chlorinated Compounds:
  • 1,1-DCE at 19.5 μg/L
  • Cis-1,2-DCE at 2,570 μg/L
  • TCE at 1,631.9 μg/L
  • Vinyl Chloride at 257.5 μg/L
  • Complex geology consisting of silty to sandy clay
  • Risk of off-site contaminant migration

The Solution: Dual Strategy Approach

The remediation team implemented an innovative treatment strategy combining:

  1. Barrier Wall Installation:
  • Prevented off-site contaminant migration
  • Utilized majority of injection points
  • Strategic placement for maximum effectiveness
  1. Hot Spot Treatment:
  • Targeted treatment around monitoring well MW-14
  • Used specialized chemical injection
  • Combined two treatment solutions:
    • 48 BAM Ultra injection points
    • 20 ABC+ injection points

Treatment Chemistry

The project utilized two complementary treatment compounds:

  • BAM™ technology for primary treatment
  • ABC+ for enhanced degradation
  • Strategic placement of both compounds for optimal results

Remarkable Results

After just three months, the treatment achieved exceptional results:

  • Over 96% reduction in all monitored contaminants
  • MW-14 showed non-detect levels for all contaminants
  • Successful containment of off-site migration
  • Results confirmed through post-treatment sampling

Key Success Factors

Several elements contributed to the project’s outstanding success:

  1. Strategic combination of barrier wall and hot spot treatment
  2. Precise placement of injection points
  3. Use of complementary treatment compounds
  4. Comprehensive monitoring and sampling program

Long-Term Implications

This project demonstrates:

  • The effectiveness of combined treatment approaches
  • Rapid achievement of remediation goals
  • Potential for complete contaminant elimination
  • Success of strategic barrier wall placement

This case study provides a valuable template for similar chlorinated solvent remediation projects, particularly in urban industrial settings.
