Former Gas Station—Southern Indiana

Learn how a former Indiana gas station achieved 90.9% benzene reduction and site closure using BAM technology, transforming wells with 10,800 µg/L contamination to non-detect levels.

ORIN successfully treated BTEX contaminated groundwater utilizing ORIN’s patented Bioavailable Absorbent Media (BAM). The primary contaminant, Benzene, was prevalent in five of the primary monitoring wells on site. ORIN utilized DPT in order to pinpoint the targeted areas with higher Benzene concentrations.

A vacuum truck was utilized during chemical injection to remove highly contaminated groundwater and to provide hydraulic control. Fifty-six injection points received a combined total of 4,760 gallons of treatment chemistry.

The Challenge

The site presented significant contamination:

  • High benzene concentrations:
    • MW-4: 10,800 µg/L
    • MW-5: 8,500 µg/L
  • Five impacted monitoring wells
  • Need for precise treatment targeting
  • Site closure requirements
  • Complex distribution needs

The Solution: Strategic BAM Implementation

The team executed a comprehensive treatment approach:

  1. Treatment Design:
    • 56 strategic injection points
    • 4,760 gallons total treatment volume
    • DPT targeting methodology
    • BAM technology deployment
    • Integrated vacuum extraction
  2. Implementation Strategy:
    • Precise contamination targeting
    • Hydraulic control maintenance
    • Contaminated water removal
    • Treatment distribution optimization
    • Continuous monitoring
